I like to joke that I missed the day in Middle School when all the girls were pulled out of class and taught how to apply and wear makeup. I imagine that the class covered everything: how to do your hair, how to make it perfectly straight but still have a lot of volume, how to shave your legs without cutting the hell out of your ankle. That overalls were bad, blue eye shadow was worse, and how to choose lipstick, foundation and concealer. This created a weird situation. They wore their pretty 'natural' makeup and their perfect eyeliner while I still held onto the old trend of body and facial glitter( Ooooh the early 2000's). I wore wire framed glasses, and generally fell into the rut of the late bloomer.
Somehow, I learned just enough for an interview, but I have never been very good at choosing and applying makeup beyond the odd eyeshadow( the eye color specific pallets are my best friend). My clothing choices evolved from lazy tomboy, to hippy to a woman who just loves color. But, my hair and makeup skills stagnated for a long time.
Not any longer. Makeup Monday's are a dedicated day for me to practice and experiment on Makeup. It's to allow me to explore my creativity, work on my fine motor skills, and to explore some of the more interesting parts of beauty culture. As I'm a grad student, mos t of my 'flair' makeup is cheap drugstore stuff. As a sufferer of eczema, my 'base' makeup is a teeny more expensive, and might change- depending on what I can afford, and what works on my face.
But, overall, I want Makeup Monday's to be fun. To be an exploration of color. To help people(and myself) choose the best colors and products for themselves. Some days, it will look great. Others, it won't. But, just like you can always rip back your knitting, you can always wash your face.
Next week: My Collection of Makeup.
